چکیده

We are facing the exhaustion of newly assignable IPv4 addresses. Unfortunately, IPv6 is not yet deployed widely enough to fully replace IPv4, and it is unrealistic to expect that this is going to change before we run out of IPv4 addresses. Letting hosts seamlessly communicate in an IPv4world without assigning a unique globally routable IPv4 address to each of them is a challenging problem, for which many solutions have been proposed. Some prominent ones target towards carrier-grade-NATs (CGN), e.g. [1], which we feel is a bad idea. Instead, we propose using specialized NATs at the edge that treat some of the port number bits as part of the address.

Tracking the Big NAT across Europe and the U.S

Carrier Grade NAT (CGN) mechanisms enable ISPs to share a single IPv4 address across multiple customers, thus offering an immediate solution to the IPv4 address scarcity problem. In this paper, we perform a large scale active measurement campaign to detect CGNs in fixed broadband networks using NAT Revelio – a tool we have developed and validated. Revelio enables us to actively determine from w...

Assessing the Impact of Carrier-Grade NAT on Network Applications

NAT444 is an IPv4 extension technology being considered by Service Providers as a means to continue offering IPv4 service to customers while transitioning to IPv6. This technology adds an extra Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN) in the Service Provider network, often resulting in two NATs. CableLabs, Time Warner Cable, and Rogers Communications independently tested the impacts of NAT444 on many popular In...

NAT Revelio: Detecting NAT444 in the ISP

In this paper, we propose NAT Revelio, a novel test suite and methodology for detecting NAT deployments beyond the home gateway, also known as NAT444 (e.g., Carrier Grade NAT). Since NAT444 solutions may impair performance for some users, understanding the extent of NAT444 deployment in the Internet is of interest to policymakers, ISPs, and users. We perform an initial validation of the NAT Rev...

Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN) Deployment with BGP/MPLS IP VPNs

This document specifies a framework to integrate a Network Address Translation (NAT) layer into an operator’s network to function as a Carrier-Grade NAT (also known as CGN or Large-Scale NAT). The CGN infrastructure will often form a NAT444 environment as the subscriber home network will likely also maintain a subscriber-side NAT function. Exhaustion of the IPv4 address pool is a major driver c...

Inferring Carrier-Grade NAT Deployment in the Wild

Given the increasing scarcity of IPv4 addresses, network operators are resorting to measures to expand their address pool or prolong the life of existing addresses. One such approach is Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN), where many end-users in a network share a single public IPv4 address. There is limited data about the prevalence of CGN, despite the implications on performance, security, and ultimately...
